When Sweden’s The Mary Onettes released their self titled debut album in 2007, I was smitten with its Echo And The Bunnymen style melancholy jangle. Unfortunately, ’09 follow-up Islands deviated from the script and was largely forgettable, but it appears they’ve righted the course for the forthcoming Hit The Waves.
Produced by Dan Lissvik, who has worked similar new wave magic with Young Galaxy and helmed The Mary Onettes’ promising Love Forever EP last year, the new album is more about sweeping grandeur than jangle — but that’s fine by me. The title track swells with strings and layered vocals that remind me of Mr. Mister (in the best possible way):
