Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, has made quite a name for herself with guitar virtuosity, disarming looks and intricate baroque pop. However, it seems she’s resistant to being limited by her reputation. Two weeks ago she tore through a memorable set at Coachella — complete with a stage dive — and this past weekend she released a raw new single for Record Store Day.
“Krokodil” is two and a half pounding minutes of thundering guitars and wailing vocals that recall Siouxsie Sioux:
B-side “Grot” is even more shocking, with death metal licks smothering and drowning delicate chamber pop vocals:
According to label 4AD, the 7″ “showcases Clark’s aggressive guitar chops and marks a stylistic departure from Strange Mercy.” Yeah, I’d say so.
