That Wayne Coyne always has something cooking in that chemically enhanced brain of his. This time it’s not a symphony of car stereos or gummy vaginas, but a musical adaptation of The Flaming Lips‘ 2002 album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.
Set to debut late this year at the La Jolla Playhouse in Los Angeles, it will feature songs from the aforementioned album as well as The Soft Bulletin and At War With The Mystics. In the most bizarre twist, the play was to have been written by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin — but as the Los Angeles Times reports, he backed out when it became clear the musical would be completely ‘sung through.’
As it stands, Coyne and director Des McAnuff are co-writing and scoring the production. Rehearsals are set to begin in September, with the story of Yoshimi’s struggles with evil forces in a robot world opening to the public in November or December.
