morrissey live in dallas from smu's mcfarlin auditorium

Last night was the third date on Morrissey’s fall tour of the US and Mexico. McFarlin Auditorium on the Dallas campus of SMU was sold out, with most of the crowd upwards of 40 — save for the random pockets of kids with good record collections. Morrissey was sardonic as ever, announcing that he had arrived to “occupy Dallas” and referencing “Thankskilling” in his introduction to “Meat Is Murder.”

The set featured three unreleased songs (“People Are The Same Everywhere,” “Action Is My Middle Name” and “Scandinavia”) and a Lou Reed cover, “Satellite Of Love.” As is the current custom, he opened and closed the set with The Smiths classics “I Want The One I Can’t Have” and “Still Ill,” which you can see below. Apologies for the sound quality — and for the memory card crapping out seconds before the end of “Still Ill”:

Smiths blog somedizzywhore has “Meat Is Murder” and early solo track “Speedway” for a further look at last night’s show. Highlights of the set were a rousing version of “Maladjusted” and a powerful take on “I Know It’s Over,” with guitarists Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias doing a fine job approximating Johnny Marr.

Compared to recent years, Moz didn’t seem to have quite the vigor and was a bit lazy with his phrasing on occasion. Perhaps he was feeding off the energy — or lack thereof — from the crowd, which was stuck in a “dry” venue. Assuming his unreleased album ever sees the light of day, he’ll be back soon.. but based on his onetime assertion that he won’t continue to perform past the age of 55, we only have a few years left to bask in the Mozfather’s greatness.

By the way, be sure to vote for your favorite Smiths songs of all time right here. Come on, it’s fun! Oh, and special thanks to Jeff K of The Old School Edge for allowing me to coat-tail.
