jónsi 'gathering stories' from 'we bought a zoo' soundtrack

If you’ve ever listened to Sigur Rós, you know how cinematic and powerfully emotive their music can be. Director Cameron Crowe, who used some of the band’s music in 2001’s Vanilla Sky, tabbed frontman Jónsi for the soundtrack to his new film We Bought a Zoo (see the trailer below).

As NPR reports, Crowe played Sigur Rós for the cast and crew during filming before even approaching Jónsi to score the movie. The resulting soundtrack features original orchestration by Jónsi, a few tracks from his solo record Go, Sigur Rós’ “Hoppipolla” and two new songs.

One of those, “Gathering Stories,” was co-written by Crowe and is full of tympani rolls, crashing cymbals, soaring voices and everything that makes Jónsi’s music so wonderful:

The soundtrack is out December 13th and the film will be released December 23rd.

I can’t wait for this movie to come out!! Hearing “Gathering Stories” for the first time made me realize just how much creativity went into this soundtrack…and the movie itself – from the poster design to the way Crowe went about finding his cast and crew. I’ve already pre-ordered my copy of the soundtrack on Amazon 🙂
