u2 covered by depeche mode, nin, garbage & more

The December issue of Q Magazine went on sale today. With it comes AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered, a tribute album celebrating the 20th anniversary of U2’s groundbreaking album.

Reference the full track list below, which features a fair share of heavy hitters. Thanks to coverme — a blog dedicated to the art of the cover song — you can stream pretty much every track. We’ve culled it down to our favorites here. Let’s start with Depeche Mode’s take on “So Cruel”:

Nine Inch Nails offer up a pretty mellow, percolating version of “Zoo Station”:

The bombast of The Killers works pretty well for “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)”:

The recently reunited Garbage give “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” a predictably slinky attitude, but step on the gas for the chorus:

Gary Lightbody and Snow Patrol try just a little too hard to mix up “Mysterious Ways”:

Jack White unleashed his fury on “Love Is Blindness,” making it very much his own:

For “Acrobat,” Glasvegas go for a much more raw, immediate sound compared to the glossy EUPHORIC /// HEARTBREAK \:

Finally, here’s a tender ballad version of “One” by Irish folkie Damien Rice:
