The third album from goth princess Zola Jesus was released yesterday. On Conatus, Nika Rosa Danilova enlisted session players for the first time — adding strings and live drums to her keyboard compositions. Even so, the album is more spartan than previous efforts, allowing Danilova’s powerful voice to command absolute attention.
The first video from the album is based on dreams experienced during the recording process, as Danilova told the New York Times:
“Because ‘Vessel’ was born from many surreal dreams I was having while writing the record, the white-banded sphinx moth was used to symbolize the otherworldliness of dreams, secret knowledge and an underlying metamorphosis that this particular moth goes through in underground desert chambers.”
