broken social scene + the stills = eight and a half

 

I was one of the few to shed a tear over the break up of The Stills. The underappreciated band from Montreal never lived up to the promise of their debut, but they were a favorite of mine.

They were a time bomb in retrospect, with two songwriters wrestling for the wheel. When Dave Hamelin stepped out from behind the drum kit to join Tim Fletcher out front, the band lost its direction.

Now, Hamelin and former Stills keyboardist Liam O’Neil have joined up with Broken Social Scene drummer Justin Peroff in a new project called Eight and a Half. According to Spin, they already have an album in the can that will be released next year on Arts & Crafts.

The trio’s first song, “Scissors,” hints at a sound that’s moodier and more synth-heavy than The Stills ever had. Check it out.. I dig it:
